Max first came to Hokkaido in 2007, originally from Australia. Like many people, he was drawn to the island by its legendary winter snow. Growing up in Sydney, he spent much of his childhood surfing and around the ocean, so living near the coast has always felt natural.
What began as a winter adventure gradually turned into a long-term home.Over the years Max has built a life exploring the landscapes around Otaru, Yoichi, and the rugged coastline of the Shakotan Peninsula. Living year-round on the coast, he spends much of the warmer months paddling the clear waters of the Sea of Japan, discovering hidden bays, sea caves and quiet stretches of shoreline that most visitors never see.
Sunny Side Up Adventures grew naturally from this connection to the area. Max enjoys sharing the beauty of the coast with small groups of guests, offering relaxed sea kayaking trips and outdoor experiences that allow people to slow down and appreciate the landscape.
Now based locally with his young family, Max balances guiding with family life and time outdoors. Whether paddling along the coast, hiking the hills above the sea, or exploring the fishing villages nearby, he believes the best experiences in Hokkaido come from moving at a slower pace and spending time close to nature.
While Max still works as a winter guide through his sister company Otaru Powder Guides, Sunny Side Up Adventures focuses on the warmer seasons—sharing the coastline, scenery and relaxed summer atmosphere of western Hokkaido.
For Max, this part of Japan is about more than just great outdoor adventures. It’s a place of balance, beautiful landscapes, and a strong connection to the sea—and he loves introducing visitors to that side of Hokkaido.
