 WHAT WE DO

Based at scenic Shioya Beach, our guided trips explore the rugged coastline of Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park, protected since 1963 for its cliffs, sea caves and marine life.

We paddle stable sea kayaks suitable for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. Tours run only in calm conditions and move at a relaxed pace, making them ideal for families and first-time kayakers.

Groups are kept small so everyone can enjoy plenty of time on the water exploring quiet bays and stretches of coastline that are difficult to reach from land.

      WHO WE ARE

Max has spent more than 15 winters in Japan and now lives year-round in Hokkaido. He also runs Otaru Powder Guides, but in the warmer months his focus shifts to the coast.

Having grown up by the ocean in Australia and now living near the water year-round in Hokkaido, he spends a lot of time on this stretch of coastline and knows the local conditions well.

Sunny Side Up is built around a simple approach: small groups, a relaxed pace, and helping guests enjoy the natural beauty of the Otaru coast from the water.
